Version française pdf - English version pdf International Conference on: AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT (ARD) IN EUROPE: TOWARDS A SHARED VISION” Egmont Palace, Brussels, Belgium • 28th – 29th June 2007
Background European countries have committed themselves to fighting poverty and hunger and to promoting sustainable development in the world’s poorest countries and thereby contribute to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Agricultural Research for Development (ARD) plays a critical role in this respect as most of the poorest countries rely on agriculture as the engine for their economic growth, and more than 70% of the poor live in rural areas. Furthermore, in Europe, agriculture and food chains are increasingly confronted with challenges such as food safety, animal health and welfare or threats to agro-biodiversity, which clearly have a global dimension.
In April 2005, the European Commission decided to fund, under the ERA-NET Scheme of the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, a project to improve coordination and cooperation between the national ARD programmes and reduce fragmentation of research. At present 14 European countries are actively participating in this ERA-ARD initiative.
Aim of the conference
The ERA-ARD conference will bring together around 150 key ARD stakeholders from the European Member States and Associated States, the European Commission and the regional and global ARD fora. Participants will exchange views and debate, inter alia, on the following questions:
- What will the ARD landscape look like in 2025?
- Would there still be a need for an ARD capacity in Europe in 2025?
- How should the European ARD capacity evolve to meet its partners’ needs and enhance its contribution to MDGs?
- What could then be a shared vision for European ARD?
Venue: Egmont Palace, Brussels, Belgium Dates and Time: 28th June 2007 from 12:00 to 18:00 & 29th June 2007 from 09:00 to 16:00
This ERA-ARD conference is scheduled immediately after the conference organised by the European Commission and its Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) on “Towards Future Challenges of Agricultural Research in Europe” (26th – 27th June 2007) so that it can complement it with the envisioned contribution of European Agricultural Research for Development.
